I work at a daycare, and usually 90% of the time someone in the center is sick (either staff or a child). I came into work sick knowing that I was not able to call off, due to that I am the only teacher in the preschool room. My co-worker decided to inform me later, that if I am not allowed to go home, and I understood the reason. However, I did not understand the ultimatium that I recieved from my boss, that I will be suspended if I do not make a doctor's appointment. I do not receive health insurance from this employer and I can not afford to go to the doctor. They also strictly frown on any call offs (doctor's excuse or not), especially myself because I am the only teacher for that room (and I do not have a replacement). I am getting better, but they are still hounding me to go to the doctors, when I can't afford it. I understand their empathy but can an employer suspend a sick employee for not going to the doctors? is that legal?

I have a manager who won't let me call off and a director that tells me to get a doctor's appointment or 'else'. I haven't called off a day from this whole issue.

You work in a daycare-they want to be sure you are not contagious and all those sweet, cute little kiddies don't come down with what ever you have. Maybe they can pay for the doctor visit or half.

They can and should. Basically, they feel you are too ill, and they have the right to require a doctors opinion that you are ok to return to work. However I don't think they can let you work AND require that you get a doctors slip. For that you need an attorney.

There is no legal standing they can use to force you to go to the doctor. Unless there is something in their personnel policy that they must have a doctor's excuse every time you are ill, stand your ground. Let them fire you and then go after them for unlawful termination.

No, it is not legal to force you to go to the doctor if they are not providing healthcare insurance.

I would try to find another job...surely with our skills you can get another job where they actually care about their employees.

As a mother who had children in daycare, I also would question having only one preschool teacher to supervise a ton of children.

For pharmacists, if you go to work with certain diseases, your license can be disciplined. Normally, your licensed is suspended until the illness is treated. Mind you, these illnesses tend to be things like tb.
