You do not need to buy a kit, but it is easier and most likely cheaper to buy some proper dye.
But dye does not cost much.
Go to the nearest drugstore/chemist/craft shop and ask the staff for dye for a sheet and they will show you the different colours.
Follow the instructions that come with the dye, like the temperature and how to fix the dye.
When you have dye meant for cotton and follow the instructions it will feel like the sheet has always been dyed like that or not dyed at all.

The rest you can easily do with the thing you have at home, like elastic bands, string, plastic bags and so on.

And remember, whatever kind of dye you use, be careful with the container you use to dye, as most dyes leave a lot of colour there.

Or search for "how to tie dye" or how to "how to tye dye" and you will find many more sites.

no they'll feel normal more than likely. depends on what product you buy, the biggest problem though is fading, and dull colors
