How could someone possibly call themself a Christian when they vote for and have the moral values of a Liberal Democrat, such as being pro-choice or promoting gay marriage. I just don't understand. The Bible clearly speaks against it.

Read your Bible, particularly the New Testament, particularly Jesus' words, then get back to me.

I am shocked that so many Christians are still registered Republicans!

OMG it is like OK if people whom are Christian Lie, Deceive, actively Gay , some married some pedophiles as long as they claim Christianity and if they are a Republican?

I my self have changed my status to non party affiliated, because I am a Christian and not willing to be deceived and rooked by the Republican party any longer. You make Democrats sound as though they are sinful by nature and yet many Democrats are Christian. This past year along has opened a republican can of worms as far as Christianity is concerned. If you believe the Republican Party is full of Christians and the other party is not Christian, Your being very deceived and mislead by your Televangelist or Minister.

My minister, Joel Hunter from Northland in Florida was asked to take the position of Christian Leader In the Republican Party this year! He did go to accept the position and after a couple of weeks He turned it down because he found it to unconcerned about the Human Needs of the American people, Money Oriented, and Underhanded. This Is True! look it up on line!

Please Just vote for the person you believe to be most qualified. There is no Christian Party and Non Christian party. This is why we have Bush Now! and it is unacceptable to Vote when your voting blindly.

Peace and Love be with us all xxoo

Oops, I think I might have picked the wrong question because I'm not Christian. But I know Christians who feel that, for example, the need to care for those unable to care for themselves, the need for a strong economy, and honesty and integrity trump other values. The items mentioned in the original entry are personal decisions not affecting society, and I believe do not belong in the law. A person of religious integrity can as easily eschew them as he or she can lying or cheating or theft, also personal religious values--which do affect others and are part of the law.
This is apart from the issue of whether it is moral to insist that one's personal (and religious) values be mandated through the law for even those who have different beliefs. I have different beliefs and I think it's immoral. And we do not live in a country ruled by religion--such as Iran.

The bible doesn't say anything about abortion or gay marriage. What Bible are you reading? BTW, all the Christians I know are liberals. I see them at church every week. Our church is an open and affirming church and they have no problems with having gay pastors or marrying gays if it was legal to do so. We were also the first denomination to allow women as pastors back in the 1850's. I think it should be legal to have gays marry and it should be the choice of the church to marry them if they want to. Otherwise, they could do it at city hall.
And, our country is about the rule of law coming from the Constitution, not from the Bible. The pledge the politicians make is to uphold the Constitution, not the Bible.

Because nothing in the Bible says you have to use the government of a secular state to force your beliefs on other people. The governments in the OT, for instance, are specifically theocratic. Our gov't isn't. See the difference?

If you're concerned about abortion, try volunteering at an organization that helps single moms or women going through "crisis' pregnancies. Or if you're concerned about the sanctity of marriage, look into mentoring younger couples (if you're married that is). Don't spend your time on YA castigating people for not using politics to address problems you're not willing to address yourself.

The Bible also speaks clearly against abusing the gifts God gave us--like we do when we pollute and treat the earth badly--and against unjust killing--like we do when we invade countries like Iraq. Like people who vote Republican so seem to enjoy. So. That's something to think about too.

Because look at the alternative...support so called "Christian" George W Bush, the lying hypocrite that claims "God" spoke to him and told him to invade Iraq. The Bible speaks out against homosexuality, but again that didn't stop George and Jeff Gannon.

how can a conservative be a Christian and support death penalty, support the right to bear arms, believe the poor do not deserve assistance, fight against civil rights, be against a fair minimum wage, support invading another nation with no legitimate reason. the Bible clearly speaks against many things that conservatives believe as well.

being a Christian has nothing to do with politics
judging your fellow man has nothing to do with being a Christian.

The Bible is like someone with multiple identities. It contradicts itself far too often. Think about it: on the one hand, there's spiteful Old Testament God, then there's loving, forgiving New Testament God. I can't see how anyone can put faith in that book myself.

However, if we are to believe at least that Christ existed, he clearly displays all the characteristics of a liberal: forgiving, non-violent, charitable. You've got to agree with that.

I don't recall a moment where Christ speaks about either abortion or gay marriage. He was vocal about love, tolerence, and critical of the religious leaders who spoke as is they were the voice of God. (I also see no mention of abortion in the Bible that would clearly rule out a pro-choice position).

So, I see no problem in having what we call liberal views politically. In fact, I see more of Christ overall in the behavior of the "Liberal Democrat", as you put it ("Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions", "And when thou pray, thou shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou pray, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret…", "Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's") than I see in the so called "Religious Right", who seem to focus on narrow issues that, as I said, I don't believe are actually covered in the Bible, ignoring the actual lessons Jesus brought us.

Why don't you ask Pat Robertson. He's figured out how to call himself a "Christian" and endorse Giuliani who clearly supports abortion, gay rights and same sex marriages. Not to mention dresses in drag and has admittedly committed adultery.
I'm not saying who's right or wrong I'm just in amazement at the hypocrisy of it.

This is a perfect example of why. People who call themselves Christians and immediately forget Christ's admonition not to judge others are extremely offensive. Anyone, Christian or otherwise, who believes that they are morally superior to others has no business with authority over another human being. And they are certainly no Christian.
