There is very little storage on my laptop (there is supposed to be 40 GB but when clicking on the (C:) drive, it says there is 14 GB of storage - and i've pretty much used all of it) and I'm considering to buy either an internal or external hard drive.
Which do you recommend?

If I buy an internal HDD, could I transfer all my files and data from my original hard drive to the new one, or would that cost even more?

And if I get an external one, could I use that as my main hard drive and store all my files there, but also use it as a portable storage system?

Sounds like you have a desktop PC with a free HDD bay. In that case, a internal HDD cost less than an external HDD.

Whether you add a 2nd internal HDD or an external HDD, you cannot move any of the file and folders created by Windows or the programs you have installed. You can move folders where you store large files such as JPEG(pics) and MP3s(music) to the 2nd drive. If this frees up enough disk space on your original HDD (C-disk), then getting an external HDD as your 2nd drive give you portability.

If you need more growth space for new programs, you're better off with an internal 2nd HDD. It's very complicated and error-prone to try to do the same thing on an external HDD, and definitely NOT advisable.

Internal is cheaper and faster. Just add another to work with your existing one.
