I think that if there really are UFO's the government would cover it up because if it leaked out to the general public, there would be mass panic.

That's my personal opinion.

Possible options:
1. There has never been any UFOs so all denials are genuine and there is no cover-up.
2. There were UFOs but the government wants it kept secret, thus the cover-up.
3. There has never been any UFOs but the government thinks it's a useful diversion so secretly encourages the conspiracy theorists while issuing denials as a fake cover-up.
4. There are UFOs but the government can't find them or control them so they cover it up out of embarrassment.

Can't think of any more right now.

I have another possible answer. Back in 1938, there was a play performed on the radio called "The War of the Worlds". It was about a fictional account of martians invading the earth. Although they did broadcast brief disclaimers at various points in the broadcast, widespread panic occured because many listeners believed it was real. Read about it at the source link I posted below.

So to prevent any possibilities of panic, I believe that the government wants to keep this information classified.

I would imagine because they need to save the evidence if there actually was a U.F.O. You may say that it washed away after all the years but there will still be a chemical change in the soil.

I agree with Marine Wife, but would like to take it a little bit more. We humans tend to be afraid of that which we don't understand and are ready to destroy whatever to "protect ourselves. Look at what the world's contries are doing to each other in the name of "protecting", be it religion, ethnic beliefs, or some other reason.

Because the public is not capable of knowing such information. There would pours of outcries and protests if the government told us.
