All names are made-up! If you pick a 'tried and true' common or biblical name, it just means someone else made it up a really long time ago. Why are there books full of the meanings of names? Because they used to be ordinary words! Are you guys really as judgmental in real life as you seem to be on here? If you see a kid called Ocean would you really think bad things about him?

It's one thing to give an opinion on a name but some of the responses I've seen are just downright rude.

YOU SAID IT GIRL!

I agree with you 1000%!!!!!

Who the heck is anyone to judge what is a REAL name anyway? That's the most ridiculous criticism I've ever heard!

It's amazing how much people are threatened by a little creativity and originality.

Names are simply a matter of personal preference. Just because I name my kid something someone doesn't like doesn't mean that they have to do it, nor does it mean they need to be cruel, judgmental or condescending about it.

I think the general problem is that names that were created centuries ago have already stood the test of time. I'm sure there were others people attempted to "make up" that never caught on because people found them unattractive, lower-class or too confusing. And that's often the issue with a DIY name today.

Sure, something like Karess, Sha-keel'eigh or Negligee might look or sound "pretty" to some parent. But the simple fact is that the first sounds like an overly-sexual word, the second utterly confusing and visually unappealing and the third a literal word related to sexy nightclothes. LOL Not the sort of names that evoke a sense of pride, class or maturity, to be honest.

However, I don't at all view that as the same as using something like Ocean, which HAS been used as both an obvious nature name and Anglicization of Celtic Oisin. Uncommon does not necessarily equally made-up, of course. LOL

And for what it's worth, I LOVE unusual names, and quite dislike many that have become overused thanks to current trends. All three of my girls have at least one, first or middle. It's just when things get ridiculous that I balk. ;) After all, there is a fine line between choosing an intriguing, virtually unheard-of name and just smashing together a jumble of letters at random. ;)

You know what? While I don't care for the trend of made up names (I would be bummed to have a name with no history or meaning) I shan't judge you. People criticize my taste in names all the time. But I'm kinda the opposite. I like long forgotten, old fashioned names. Like Temperance, Edgar, Viola, Ingrid, Ichabod. Everyone in my family has unusual names. We happen to value originality and uniqueness over the convenience of conformity. People say "How could you do that to a child?" I would like to know what kind of awesome favor someone thinks they are doing their child by giving them the trendiest, most common name that will be shared by a million other kids, thereby dooming them to go through their schooldays known as "Madison S" or "Emily R." Besides, I went to the alternative school, where everyone had a "weird" name. My first three boyfriends were named Odin, Orion, And Earthan. Ocean will do just fine...and probably lose her virginity to Ezekiel or Saffron.

If you don't want someone's opinion, don't ask for it.

You can't ask for an opinion and get mad because someone is critical.

There is a difference between a name that was created thousands of years ago and has been used by millions of people and name that YOU made up 2 days ago...

Besides, if you name your child Ja'tesia or Jayden or something else stupid people are going to tell you it's trashy and made up.

The point is not whether or not it's okay to make up a name for your child or to co-opt a word into being a name, the point is whether it's fair to a child to foist a hard to spell/pronounce/live with name that limits their career choices upon them. Do you honestly think someone named Kaleessiaaaa is going to end up being president one day? She'll be lucky to be a daytime stripper.

And just to be clear... the child is not the one being judged for their stupid name, the PARENTS are. The child didn't give itself a silly, trendy name.

And if by judgmental you mean discerning and possessing standards... then yes, yes I am and I'm not ashamed of it!

The thing with unusual names is that they are responded to like new WORDS. Some are pretty some are weird but they DO NOT determine who the person IS. I think Ocean is a cool name and i have a friend named River. They are unusual but not a reason for discrimination. I think that people today just look for more reasons to pick on each other and have resorted to NAMES, so pathetic. The name i have picked out for my daughter that i HOPE to have some day is Temerity (which means boldness) i think it's lovely even if it is found in a dictionary instead of a baby name book.

a name is a name and is what makes us all unique and i don't find anything offensive about any name in general, it may remind me of something terrible but that doesn't mean every person with that name is terrible. I think the name Ocean is cool and to me represents power and life because the ocean is a very powerful thing and the life it holds is phenomenal.

I also like unusual names but I really don't understand why everyone asks what other people think of certain names. If you like it and you want to use it why do you care what other people think? I'm sure you don't like every name other people pick whether its common or unusual.

No. No, I would not think bad things about him. Original and unusually names are nice. Its his parents that named him not himself. His parents had the decision and made the decision themselves.
