A friend of mine started dating this person who's into astrology. They decided to do readings on my friends family and friends one day. Not knowing why, I gave my time of birth and it was given to this person. I was told later that this person advises me to never give out my time of birth because someone can find out everything about me. Thats how I found out a reading was done on me. Why was the time such an important detail? Should I be worried that this person warned me AFTER the readings were done FIRST?

actually they can pretty much know your basic personality by just the date of your birth including the year, it can be flawed though since by default they make your time of birth 12:00

but with your time of birth theyll have a pretty accurate reading and aspects of your planets.

not to mention they would know one of your most important placement. the Ascendant. its our dreams and aspirations and who we want to be.

on top of that if they have your time of birth they would also have access to your houses. not the house where you live but your planets positions in the houses. this could tell them your future, your work, how long you would live, marriage, relationship.

cool eh?

If your time was given to a competent professional, yes, I would worry; because they can tell every aspect of your life, right down to what your boss's children are like if need be. Or if your sister-in-law's kid was cheating on their spouse. Or if your accountant is ripping you off. How old you were when you first had sex, moved to a new house, got stitches, etc. Or if your neighbor will sue you because your dog bit his kid. But not to worry, because no competent professional would ever misuse such information. And I'm pretty sure this person who's "into astrology" can't read a chart for diddly squat anyway, beyond the general garbage your can read online or in books.
Why on earth would you give someone your birth time anyway without knowing why? That's not too smart! Not just astrologically speaking, but for anything! And it's often used as a scam; give me your birth time for a free reading, yada, yada, and then later you find out your identity's been stolen. I mean, just why did you think somebody was asking for your birth time anyway??? Why would you give such info to somebody without asking why, is what I'm asking.

Assume for a moment a person born in NYC. There would be many others born in the city at the same time of the same day. The astrologer would have to say that all of them have the same personalities, the same life opportunities and the same aspirations. After all, the stars and planets are in the same alignment for all of them.

Doesn't it sound silly that an astrologer would find one indistinguishable from so many others?

As for the accuracy of your 'reading,' did the astrologer say anything that you friend did not know about you? A good astrologer is expert at picking up on body language. Read some of the on-line articles from the debunkers and see if they don't make a lot of sense.

They cannot find out everything about you. They can only find out general qualities which people who were born on the same day and time have in common. Such as whether people with your sign are dreamy, or hard working, etc.

The time of day is part of your horoscope. The astrologer finds out which planets were ascending and descending in the sky at the time of your birth. There are thousands of people born at exactly the same time as you were, so the things astrologers find out are only generalizations which apply to thousands of people.

Astrology is not always accurate, since there are many variables such as personal spirit, soul, circumstance and nurture.

Most people who do readings of friends and family are only interested in finding out little things about a person they like and feel friendly towards. You shouldn't worry that they have any secret information about you.

They only have information about your astrological sign, not you personally.

Don't worry, be happy ... and know that your friends like you, and want to know you better.

The time of your birth is important for finding out where the planets are in your chart but they also need to know your geographical location when you were born also. A chart doesn't give such specifics for you to worry about someone else knowing it. The one crucial reason for the birthtime is to find out your rising sign. Some of the other planets transits are slow and don't change in months or years. Don't worry about it though.

Hello Amber

In Astrology time, date & place of birth are the basic requirements for building a natal chart.

All that the natal chart can do it tell of personality traits - so no harm done.

Ask them to ask you first next time or simply ask them to respect your privacy.

Yah If you give your exact time, and date of birth people can read everything about your personality.

I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Birthday's are pretty easy to come upon...-and Astrological "Signs" are usually based upon the date & time we are born... In theory, those signs are supposed to tell us what we're "like" & what that implies for our Futures... Whether you believe it or not- is up to you... :)
