I make cheese balls for the holidays for both around the house and for family & friends. They're great with whole wheat crackers. I sometimes make them in advance and freeze them (they freeze well). Here's the recipe:

8 ounces cream cheese
8 to 16 ounces of grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 package Hidden Valley Ranch dressing
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup skim milk
These are optional, depending on your taste:
Chopped red peppers
Chopped green onions
Finely chopped celery
Finely chopped green pepper
Minced garlic

Mix Hidden Valley Ranch dressing, milk and mayonnaise. Add in cream cheese and cheddar cheese. Mix well and put them into freezer for about 15-25 minutes.

Shape into balls (makes 2 good size balls, 3 smaller). Put back into freezer just long enough to make the ball firm enough to roll. Roll cheese ball in pecan pieces or chopped parsley. Enjoy!

Last year we made a big basket for our daughter and son
and husband. My husband bought some ribbon candy and
he made some chocolate covered cherries, and he made
some pastry of different kinds and we took it over to them
as their Christmas present. And our daughter told us she and
her husband really appreciated that thoughtful gift since she's
always traveling or out of town for business and she never is
home to cook anymore, much less bake. And too now she
has a disease that forbids her to eat anything in the starch or
bread lines so she doesn't need the temptation of baking if
she had the time. I know in the past, she has exchanged things we gave them, as they are very picky and buy what they
need, when they need it. So knowing what to gift them with is
very tough to figure out anyway. I have made them things for
Christmas, and I don't even see the pretty wreath I made one
year for them. So food they like and so that's what we'll stick
with again this year.
We do a snack tray for New Years Eve, and sometimes
for New Years Day. And it's the cheese and crackers and
summer sausage affair. This year, we've got two little munch
mouths to beg for a bite, where last year, we only had one.
So that will be interesting. Also if we get a tree, that too will
be interesting to watch, with our two Chihuahuas racing thru
and creating havoc. LOL.
My hubby often will make strips of deep fried tortillas that
become nachos when they've dried and lightly salted. He cuts
them into strips before hand, and either layers them with
cheese and sliced olives, or later they can be dipped into salsa or melted cheese for an added snack.
We have a friend who seems to expect those when he and his wife come to visit. She could make them at home, but she never has. He can almost fill up on them, he enjoys them so much. And he's always so pleased, when he finds them waiting and he'll eat them plain, without anything added LOL.
Maybe you could make some of those and save some money
on tortilla chips from the store.

The hubby carefully cuts up several different cheeses and buys fancy crackers and little summer sausage to slice up. He meticulously lays it out on the big tray and is very proud of himself. I am glad he likes to do it so I dont have to.
