I've heard that one should should not leave it laying right side up because all the good luck will fall out but upside down on a table is acceptable . knock on wood.

i've heard that all tables have mysterious forces, so when a hat is left on one, the table's forces are pulled into the hat, making the wearer of the hat unlucky.

Um never heard that one but maybe it's just rude to leave your hat on the table?

I think rude also - a scare tactic to prevent people from leaving their hats. My mum always told me if I played out after dark the Banshee would get me. Scare tactic. But made me a believer!
