(x-3)^2 = 81 . Take the square root of both sides
x-3 = 9 or x-3 = -9
Solve both equations
x = 12 or x = -6

2007-12-01 15:40:51 · answer #1 · answered by Ralph G 2 · 1 0

(x-3)squared =81 becomes
x^2-6x+9=81
x^2-6x-72=0
factors to (x-12)(x+6)=0

if you want to use the quadratic formula,
a=1, b=-6, c=-72

(x-3)^2=81

(x-3) = 9 (square root both sides)

x=12 (add 3 to both sides)

x - 3 = ± 9
x = 12 , x = - 6

(x-3)^2 = 81
Take the square root of both sides to get:
(x-3) = 9
Add three to both sides to get:
x = 12

(x-3)² = 81
x - 3 = ± 9
x' => x' - 3 = 9 => x' = 12
x" => x" - 3 = - 9 => x" = - 6
