4WD high should be engaged either in drive, park, or neutral, it don't matter, although its a shift on the fly system, I still recommend to people that they stop before engaging the system to reduce the wear on the drive-train components.

4WD low should only be engaged at a complete stop, place transmission in neutral, select 4WD low, place transmission back into desired gear. Unlike what Brian said about going into park when engaging 4WD low, it will not engage in Park, only in neutral.

I have a suburban, 1998 4wd! They're awesome! Some have buttons and some like mine are on the floor and you have to do it manually! u simply put it in neutral with it on of course and select which gear you want hi or low! These vehicles are high maintenance and gas guzzlers! I own the darn thing now, and u don't even want to know the money I've spent on the upkeep and just had the tranny rebuilt! Next time around I will buy a Toyota Tundra!

My 1995 Tahoe engages very slowly into 4 wheel drive. Is this normal or is there a problem with my actuator?

thanks for going Chevrolet. if it's push button hit the 4 high button at under 30mph.it is 4x4 on the fly but it's rough on the truck any faster than that. if it has the floor shifter pull it into 4 high. the only time you have to go into neutral or park is to go into 4 low. good luck with your new truck!!!
