Without a doubt the strategic US partner would be Russia. While it is large and uncooperative (as any moderate power should be), it is Western oriented and likely a much more important ally than Iran. While Iran would be considered an important ally, the fact of the matter is that Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are also large allies in the region, and none have a very good relationship with Iran to speak of. Both are resource rich, but Russia's resources are far greater and there is a larger variety of them, as well as potential for Russia to grow into a powerful consumer-based society, both an importer and exporter.
Russia is experiencing a feel-good pro-Putin surge that probably won't last through the next presidency, and should Putin "step forward" to take a bigger role as prime minister or father-figure, the Putin romance may have run its course. Russians like a powerful leader as anyone does, but they're not eager to appoint any president for life or supervisor of the state. Russia may bang on its drums all week long, hold small military cooperation tasks with China and Kazahkstan, but at the end of the day most Russians see themselves as Europeans, or as a friend of Europe, and not its enemy (doing so would be undoing three centuries of maneuvring and identity building since Peter the Great). And Europe and the United States walk hand in hand in nearly every matter of foreign policy of any importance.
Finally, Russia's biggest complaint is that we don't respect it as a big power, and Putin has dredged the mess of the 1990s as entirely the fault of the "greedy" capitalists taking Western advice. Given a little retrospect, I think most Russians will see past this and realize it was simply a gold-rush of opportunities and criminalization following the breakdown of a system of cronyism. Putin's story serves the uneducated very well because it doesn't have to make much sense beyond the surface, as this does not. Iran on the other hand has adopted an anti-Western stance since the late 1970s and a generation has grown highly anti-American in that time. Additionally it would be difficult to build a close allied partner with Iran in the midst of radical fundamentalism and our stance against this trend, considering Iran is such a focal point of it.
I would rather not see either side enter a war, however, as both are potential allies that should be treated and respected as such. Considering they'll ride out the current regimes, I suspect they're waiting for us to ride out our current administration too. But given the choice, it is really no choice at all. Budy vihbeerat' Rusiya.

Are you insinuating that Iran and Russia would go to war against one another? To the contrary. They will be united in the coming war on Isreal.

With their present governments, Russia. At least they are not suicidal/homicidal.
As a baby-boomer, it's sad to me when any country can be compared unfavorably with Russia, but it's happening now.
I thought the Russians were the embodiment of evil [sigh].

I would be mutual and hope that both countries would destroy each other. Even though the media says Russia is an Ally they are not.
