Drive along the Mississippi River. There are great sights to be seen and small towns on both sides of the Mississippi.

Make sure the car has good A/C! Midwest summers can be brutally humid.

I would recommend a nice scenic drive up the Mississippi. Wisconsin Dells (southern Wisconsin) has waterparks and is a big tourist's destination over here. They also have a Ripley's museum. If yous are of age, Madison and La Crosse (WI) have the best nightlife. If yous really like live music Summerfest is a good time (first week of July in Milwaukee). I think the most scenic area in the state is Arcadia (hwy 93 halfway between La Crosse and Eau Claire). Have fun!

I am actually in the middle of the mid west, but if you chose to go more south, as I'm not much of a traveler, but recall a really cool, moving, tourist spot we stopped at on a trip to the Grand Canyon in Groom Texas. It has the biggest cross in the Western Hemisphere and has a very cool life size stataury scenes of the crucifiction in stages. I have been very few places, but recall that as one of the coolest, other than Niagara Falls.

Hit up Chicago if you want some time in a city cuz it's pure awesomeness! There are a ton of museums and parks and shopping and restaurants; I love it here!
