a blanket or pillow
i've made both of these
blankets are easier with sewing machines

Blanket:
take a silky fabric and a fuzzy/soft fabric
and sew them together inside out (like a giant pillow case)
then put them inside in and sew the remainder area carefully

When I became handi-capped, I went for the throat. I started making quilts. I took the time to figure out how a machine works, all the operating parts, the adjustments etc. Then I got a bunch of books and mags about quilts and started watching "simply quilts" on Home and Garden.
It's quite simply really, you just sew a bunch of squares together to make a quilt. You have to design it, cut the material etc, this is where the fun comes in.

I think I've made about 60 quilts so far and, warming blankets, pillows.

When I took home-ec in school, they always started with a skirt. Simplicity has a line of very simple patterns that only take a short time to complete. You could make placemats also. Sometimes, Wal-Mart will have some pre-printed items for the holidays such as vests, placemats, etc. that you just cut out with simple sewing.

You can buy a pattern at wal-mart or some place like that and they say easy I would start with one of them. also use cotton nothing slick it is harder to sew.

A pillow case as you dont need a zipper in it and it is composed of only straight stitching.
