I think that if the person cannot come to work sober then he should have some sort of discipline. I do not like people that have to go to work drunk. =)

Being drunk at work is not good.....but people make mistakes and I am sure they feel bad enough about getting fired.....I don't see any need to give a bad reference unless you are sure they have a history of that........In fact, I doubt very much that they will give you as a reference, they will just not put your company on their job history...been there, done that!!!

It depends on how long they've been working for you. If it's a short time...good move. If it's a very long time I'd give them a warning in writing and tell them if they do it again, you'll have to let them go. If the place you work has an employee assistance program, I'd make a mandatory referral. Then they can be referred to detox or rehab.
If it was only 1 time I wouldn't give them a bad reference, I wouldn't give any reference...that gives a new employer a message.
You sound very frustrated & angry...like they betrayed you. It's not personal to you.

Termination for being drunk at work is standard.
For a long standing, no previous problem employee, I would discuss it with them to find out what happened. I would most likely put them on suspension pending documented psych review which would have to be voluntary. It is possible that, with the right help and willingness of the employee to seek help, they can continue to be a productive employee.
An employee that is an unknown or new would be terminated.
The review would be based on work performance only, but when asked if they were eligible for rehire, I would say no.

But if I may suggest, don't give a bad reference. Just don't give him any reference. I think the termination would suffice for him to learn the lesson. Not giving him any reference, good or bad, would be like giving him another chance. Besides, people could change, too.

If that is what you really did and they were honestly drunk - You have NO OTHER CHOICE but to do what you did.
DO NOT feel guilty about it. And that person need to get their act together.
Bad reference? well... you don't have to say anything bad - but you don't have to praise them either. Just say that they worked there and what their duties were.

You fired him/her, why keep punishing them by giving bad references? If they were a bad performer is one thing, but I don't feel you should keep punishing them for a very stupid decision.
