Last night I was up watching a movie and at 3 AM i saw something scurry in from "UNDER" my front door of my apartment. The crack is under .5 inches.

I then see a mouse running around, and it goes into my closet and then hides. I try to get it out and open the front door.

It then runs across the hallway and squeezes under the front door of my neighbor.

1) What kind of mouse is it? It looks smaller than a brown mouse. It is completely brown and very small, and kind of fat in the stomach.

2) How can i prevent it from coming back into my apartment? It's creepy how it runs around the building at night.

I'd say its total length including tail is only 2.5 inches. Its body is less than an inch, and it has a fat stomach.

Yeah, I've always thought mice were a bit larger, but common house mice (Mus musculus) can be as small as an inch. (see below)

I've been lucky- only ever had to hunt down a few of the critters. Since you live in an apartment, I don't think keeping your home spotless will make much of a difference. I'd go to your manager and see if they'll bring a professional exterminator to deal with the infestation.

You might also ask for weatherstripping under the door, though you'd be surprised at the number of locations where they might find a way into your house- mainly sinks- but every home just has gaps around baseboards or outlets.

I don't think you can prevent them from entering. But you might find a delay-action poison. It's usually an anti-coagulant, so they'll bleed internally and die somewhere else.

Make sure you don't attract them by leaving food out.
