I need to know what causes this smell
all I know is that he used a lighter to ignite whatever he was smoking/doing.

My guess is he is using the smell of matches to cover up for the smell of whatever he is smoking, like weed or something.

hello. Sulfur is an element. I do not know what your brother is smoking, but he probably doesn't keep the lighter on for longer than for lighting his taste.
