I was going to answer, but Terryn M already gave a pretty damn good answer.
A Windows 98 probably doesnt have the required hardware to install windows XP. If all you want is to browse the internet, and type documents, you will be fine.
However, if you want to do anything else, such as play games, download music, etc. Then you probably want to buy a new computer because it is too expensive to upgrade a PC. Just buying a Liscence for Windows XP is going to cost you about 200 dollars.

VannerBananer :) What a nice name lol
Well Windows 98 is kind of old, but the computer I'm using right now originally came with Windows 98 and it still works fine (I'm using WinXP now). Just be sure that the computer will handle WinXP before you buy XP for it. Email me if you need any more help.

Just so long as the computer has over 64mb or fam it should be fine to put windows xp on. But if you are only going to use it for word processing and internet I would stick to windows 98 office 2002 and use firefox for web browsing and you should be able to get most things done on it. There are even drivers you can download to use USB memory drives with windows 98

Do not expect to get good performance on XP, no 98 machines had enough memory or processor performance to run it. Make sure you download drivers for ALL it's existing hardware and save it to cd, or you will be totally stuck afterwards. I would suggest a better option would be to find a copy of Windows 2000, it is still supported, more stable, runs well on limited resources and does practically everything XP will do. Most of my business customers, and half my private ones still use it, and none of them wants to change it.

Here's What You Need to Use Windows XP Home Edition
• PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required; Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended (I recommend 1.5 GHz at minimum)
• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features) (I recommend 512 MB at minimum)
• 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space. (I would recommend having at least a 40 GB hardrive)
• Super VGA (800 Ã 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
• CD-ROM or DVD drive
• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
If it meets these requirements then it should be good for basic things but nothing more. It would be fine for maybe just music or homework or some of your older, more basic games like RollerCoaster Tycoon, etc.

What ever computer it is, if i has win98 on it it's probably very old. That means there's a good chance that WinXP won't install. And if it does it'll go extremly slow. I'd try to post the PC in ebay and see if anyone wants it and with the money and some of your piggy bank money, buy a better PC. You can save the monitor.

its fine for the simple stuff (basic games, internet, word processing). I would suggest updating to xp because they no longer support 98 in any form.
