My computer keeps warning me that I have limited disk space on my C drive. There is a WINDOWS folder in this drive holding a great deal of information, however, my computer warns me that I cannot rename or delete these system files. Besides that folder, the others are quite small and my D drive has next to nothing in it. Is there anyway to tell what I need in the WINDOWS folder? Can these items be compressed or altered in away as not to take up so much space?

Thank you for your help.

The WINDOWS folder contains that files that run the actual Windows program itself. If you alter or remove them, the computer would stop working. You need to leave them alone.

The place to look is in the "My Documents" folder. Usually you will have pictures, music and other documents there that what are actually filling up the hard drive. Copy off any of them you can to CD or DVD.

Go into the Control Panel and click on the Add or Remove Programs icon. You will see a list of all the programs on your computer. If you are like most people, you will have more than one graphic program, more than one music program, and a bunch of little one you downloaded from the Internet that you do not even remember what they do or why you wanted them. Remove any that you can live without.

From the Desktop, open the My Computer icon, and look for the icon or listing for the Hard Drive (C:). Right click on it, and select Properties. Click the "Disk Cleanup" button. This will run a utility that will clean temp files, Internet files, and other things that build up over time that you do not need. You can also allow it to compress old files. This will take any files that you have not used for months and "compress" them so they take up less room.

Between those, you should be able to free space on your hard drive.

Your hard drive may be partioned to the C and D drive and you may be able to put stuff on the D drive, but leave that folder alone.
