When you say you want to learn guitar by ear and you don't want music lessons, you're kind of shooting yourself in the foot. Music lessons, when you are learning guitar by ear, are not what you might think! These lessons don't teach you how to read music or tab, they teach you how to train your ear so that you can play. Afterall, that's what you want to do right? Play guitar by ear?
I'm afraid that there really isn't a better way than to play the guitar a lot. But. It is best to get some fundamentals under your belt if you are an absolute beginner. If you're not a beginner and you can already play some songs but you're not really enjoying your playing. Then you might need to get some sort of structure together. Some foundation behind your playing and your learning.
The main thing here is that you want to play guitar 'cause you love it. You like the sounds it makes etc. If you're interested I have a blog running that will hopefully help people to learn to play guitar by ear.

Hope this will be of some help.

I hate to tell you, but a lot of practice and getting to know your instrument. If you don't want to take lessons I suggest you learn to read tabs and get a program that will play through the song with you such as power tab, or guitar pro. tabs is very simple. they will have a line made of dashes ( if you don't get a program) with a number on it. the line represents the string and the number represents what fret number to play. the strings will be High E (top) B (second from the top) G (third from top) D (third from bottom) A (second from bottom) and the low E at the very bottom on the page. Good luck learning and happy playing.

Learn the basic positions first. It'll make it a lot more interesting; otherwise you'll get bored and give up quickly.
Then after you have those basic positions experiment and practice.

Get a guitar chord book and use your knowledge of them by placing the appropriate chord over the lyrics of the song you wish to sing.
Learn what chords belong in each key signature.
