An intellectual is someone very well read who tends toward reflection, and speculation as opposed to emotion. They discuss ideas, and use their "intellect". They probably need to be fairly intelligent to really absorb the knowledge well, but primarily it describes someone who is highly educated. Intelligence is primarily an inborn or genetic trait. Someone could be highly intelligent (with the potential to be an intellectual) but lack education or schooling.
I consider myself intelligent and pretty well read, but not quite at the level of an intellectual. Scholars, university professors--that's who I associate with the word intellectual.

Both. I have an IQ of 187.
But I know more about philosophy than anyone else has ever known, because I make sure all my definitions deal with internal workings, not just the appearances other people appear to get hung up on, so-called leaders and intellectuals included.
Look the difference is simple.
1.Somebody who spends all his time reading other people's opinions and not thinking for himself is called 'pedantic'; such minds don't necessarily know or define anything scientifically; but if they do learn to think, such an "intellectual" becomes a philosopher--a lover of wisdom, not a mind who has to quote someone just to say "howdy".
2. Someone who has a quick mind, a good memory, imagination and other positive mental traits is "intelligent". But the question is--what such a person does with that intelligence? Unless he checks his ideas back against reality, not the Bible or somebody's other failed book of bad ideas, he could end up as a 'failed mentality', instead of being a bright mind eventually becoming an 'intellectual'
and a philosopher whose ideas work in Reality space/time.

How "bout this:
Intelligent is the ability to do; such as school work, reading, etc.
Intellectual is on a higher level of thinking and reasoning and drawing conclusions and planning, etc.
You need intelligence to be intellectual, and you need intellect to be intelligent.

I think that I am intelligent. I just don't show that I am. I make 100s on my tests, but I never turn in homework. I can play guitar, piano, I can write with both hands, I get along with people by making good descisions.
Personally I think that everybody is intellegent.
