Well, I just got a best answer, so I figured I might as well "spend" the points... Would anyone please tell me the story/characters/plot/events/etcetera of War and Peace? The book, not the movie! (Was there a movie? I don't know!) I'm not asking for homework help, it's just that I've never read the book, but I'm writing a story and at least one of the characters have read War and Peace (or at least partially read it), so I really need to know what happens... Thank you so much and could you please answer tonight because I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow and will be gone all day...? Thanks!

cha92107-Thank you so much! But I'm not basing the story on a character from War and Peace, the character's someone else.

well War and Peace is one of my favorite novels ever.
I'll elaborate a bit... just gonna get a glass of water. brb
if you have not read it you should.
it is a historical novel and most of the plot revolves around families and their fate in times of napoleonic war in Russia.
It is a dense book filled with ambition, passion, drama, love, heroism and violence. A must read my friend, so even if you read the synopsis, don't walk away from it.

Fred is right. You should read it. It takes place about 1812.

You might say that it is a coming-of-age story about countess Natalia (Natasha) Rostova, the daughter of minor nobility.

She becomes romantically involved with prince Andrei Bolkonsky, a military officer and the son of more important nobility.

A third character is Pierre Bezhukhov, the illegitimate son of a rich man. Pierre spends his life fooling around until his father, on his death bed, recognizes Pierre as his son. Pierre gets serious.

That's peace. In this situation, Napoleon invades Russia. That's war, and it affects all the characters. There are dozens more characters, and they all have names, patronymics, and nicknames.

In the end, Natasha and Andrei break up, Andrei dies, Napoleon retreats from Russia after the burning of Moscow, and Natasha marries Pierre.

. War and Peace is primarily concerned with the histories of five aristocratic families--particularly the Bezukhovs, the Bolkonskys, and the Rostovs--the members of which are portrayed against a vivid background of Russian social life during the war against Napoleon (1805-14). The theme of war, however, is subordinate to the story of family existence, which involves Tolstoy's optimistic belief in the life-asserting pattern of human existence. The heroine, Natasha Rostova, for example, reaches her greatest fulfillment through her marriage to Pierre Bezukhov and her motherhood. The novel also sets forth a theory of history, concluding that there is a minimum of free choice; all is ruled by an inexorable historical determinism.

which character are you doing it on?

I agree that the best thing to do would be to read it. However given that you probably don't want to do it and you state you don't have time right now I would recommend Wikipedia. I'm sure Cliff's Notes has something too.
