A stock analyst who works for UBS has reduced/lowered his opinion of the stock of company x. On the scale "strong buy/buy/hold/sell/ strong sell" this analyst lowered the rating for Company x. If you believe that the guy is an independent analyst thinking for himself, acting on valid info, then it reflects an educated opinion that Company x is less strong than before.

UBS is an analysts as is most large banks and their opinion counts to some investors. The problem is you can usually find just as many that still like the stock. They like to keep us guessing. I wish they would keep their opinions to themselves, they only mess up good stocks most of the time and it makes me wonder if they are running them down so they can buy in cheaper later.

Each brokerage has a rating scale for a stock describing its opinion on whether or not to own the stock (example: strong buy, buy, hold, sell, strong sell) They differ from firm to firm but downgrade means to reduce the rating scale level, say from buy to hold
