Is over a year normal? What would make a child over a year wake up every night?

My thinking was children six months and older should be sleeping through the night, but...I don't have kids so I don't really know for sure!

Yes, over a year is normal. Babies who are breastfed often wake up at night to nurse past their first birthdays. Completely normal. Here is a great link on infant/ toddler sleep:
( I have more.. I just can't find them in my messy favorites!)

Every baby is different. My son was 3 weeks old when he started to sleep through the night. He is now 13 months and wakes up once (on some nights) for his a bottle.

Every child is different, I know people who have children who are almost two and still not sleeping through the night. If your child sleeps in his or her own crib, it should be easier for them to sleep through the night. our daughter Kaylie slept through the night at around 3 months. She would go to bed at 9 and wake up at 5:30 or 6.

I know it's hard right now, but just be patient. The more rest she got during the day, the better she slept at night. I know that sounds backwards, but that's what we have discovered.

I guess it depends. My daughter started sleeping through the night when she was 5 weeks old and stopped around the 5th month. She's 10 1/2 months old now and she still doesn't sleep through the night (she will wake up once or twice).

There is no general age. That's the tough part.

Some mothers luck out and have an 8 week old that snoozes from dusk til dawn, but the majority of moms are still up at least once a night with their babes until somewhere between the 8th and 12th month.

However, it is perfectly common (and totally OK!) for children to still experience night wakings even into their second year.

It's all in the perception and how we handle childrens sleep patterns that will inevitably determine whether we feel "blessed" or "cursed" when thinking about our little one's sleeping habits.

My son started sleeping through the night at 3 1/2 months old.
My daughter didn`t sleep through the night until she was 3 years old.
The baby book that I had said babies should start around 3 or 4 months. My daughter didn`t read the book.

can be 3 weeks, can be 3 years! My daughter was sleeping through at 8 weeks, but started waking up again at 5 1/2mths.

Many reasons a child of over a year could still be waking. There's a great book called "helping your baby to sleep, why gentle techniques work best" by Anni Gethin you could suggest to the parents, it helped me understnd my daughters sleep patterns.

It depends. My oldest slept through the night at 6 months old, my youngest was almost 1. Every child is different and there are numerous factors that keep them up; teething, constipation, gas..etc...

I'd guess three years old, but that may be too early.

Some children do it from just a couple months of age. There are lots of different types of children.
