I didn't know that it was. It seems to be a non issue these days anyway.

In the times before DNA or blood testing the only way to be sure a child was 100% yours was to be sure your bride was a virgin on your wedding night. The honeymoon started by actually taking your bride off in to the woods for about 2 weeks to knock her up without any other males anywhere close by, so you you could be totally sure you were the father.
Not having a hymen doesn't mean you're not a virgin, but having one pretty much means you are a virgin, and the importance of it was to put the guys mind at ease that no other man had impregnated her before the wedding.

The hymen is NOT seen as an accurate sign of virginity. Many virgins do not have intact hymens for a multitute of reasons (tampons, physical activity, surgery etc....). However, if the hymen is intact, then that is an indication that she is still a virgin, but may have had alot of sexual activity, contracted STDs, but not had penetration.

Its not really used because some women break their hymens using tampons, riding bikes or horses, and some women don't have them.

I don't know if it is. Cosmetic surgery makes it possible and affordable to recreate the hymen.
