That is not always the way it works. Sometimes a manager wants to get rid of an employee, but the HR department needs to do an investigation to see if the termination is legal or if it is merely due to a manager's discrimination.

Unfortunately, in this age of the employer's market AND 'at will 'states, MOST employers will either wait till the end of the day, or till the end of the week when they have their 'eggs' in a row.
Some employers have gotten so dirty, that they will have security escort you out of the building after you have been terminated.
Employers KNOW that firing someone on the clock is tricky. There may be repercussions. Some employers are NOW firing people by Email. I remember, from one job that I had, that I was called into the boss' office at quitting time, and was unemployed five minutes later on a Friday evening.
Thankfully, the experience taught me that I can get a BETTER job...and I did! Har Har! Sometimes, we get soooooo comfortable in our jobs, we forget that we were looking for a job when we got there...and will be looking for one when we leave.

Well, I suppose the manager was going to inform the employee in person, rather than over the phone. When you say immediately, do you mean within a day or two, a week or two or are you speaking of a much longer time? I think it is customary to fire someone or lay someone off in person at the place of employment...unless of course that person is telecommuting or in another state.

I'd think that it's better to fire the employee in person. Are you really suggesting that the manager just do it over the phone? While either way is legal, I'd think that most people would think that firing someone over the phone would be worse than doing it in person.

Only if the person is immediately fired. You should never fire a person and have them continue working, until the end of the day, or any period of time.

To quote Donald Trump, the longer you
you put it off, the harder it is on both of you.
The currrent trend is, first thing Monday morning. suppose the thinking is, let the person enjoy the weekend. How generous!
Me--- just do it and get it over with. Mon, Fri, Tues, what difference does it make.?
