if i were to mail a hand gun to my self in a different state, say i just overnight it fed ex or ups ? (my wife would be there to receive it), do they "scan" the items we mail or would they not know what is shipped ? The reason i ask is because I am not a dealer or know one.

You are supposed to go to a gun shop and have them ship it to a gun shop in the other state

It is not illegal to mail weapons via common carrier - there's just some guidelines. In fact, I work in a place where people do just that - we get rifles fed-exed all the time. one of the guys put up a couple good links to go to - or, you could just call your ups branch. The "illegal" thing is a misconception and more accurately stated as you must go through an FFL when purchasing so the proper checks can be done.

It is illegal to ship firearms through common carrier mail weather it be the USPS, Fed-ex, UPS, DHl ETC. You must ship it from an authorized firearm dealer, in which they will ship it to your spouses local firearm dealer.

Disassemble the gun and you will be ok. Alsosend the ammunition in another package or dont send it and buy new when you get there. I would also ask them at the post office.

READ the terms and conditions for UPS and FedEx. These are PRIVATE companies and have there own rules completely independent of the US post office.
I linked the relevant pages from their websites under sources.

I wouldn't risk the federal prison time.
If you could do it, so could a terrorist.
