i have optimum online and i have the modem they gave me connected to a linksys wireless router and to my desktop computer. When i test the speed of the connection from the desktop on testmy.net i get 1 star which is slow. When i disconnect the wireless router its 5 stars. Do you think if i get a gateway instead of having a modem and wireless router it will speed up my connection.

It shouldn't matter. Make sure you have the latest Firmware installed on your linksys router -- when I bought mine it was a complete POS until they updated the firmware a year later. Thanks linksys.

You must not connect the desktop to the modem, it must go through the router. And a router and gateway are the same thing. If this is dsl you will always get faster connections with a router/modem replacing the modem.
