the pencil name or number you refer to describes the nature of the lead, or compressed graphite of the pencil core. A very hard lead is harder to use but it has its purposes. Some are too soft, but again they have their purposes. The #2 seems to be the one that is 'just right.' See? Simple.

American-labeled pencils, if I use a #1 pencil I should get a really dark, perhaps smudgy line, and if I use a #4 pencil, I should get a really light line. Fair enough.

Good question, but: If olive oil is made from olives and canola oil is made from canola, what is baby oil made from?
But really. The #2 pencil is the favourite because it is more versatile, it has a medium thickness and medium coloured lead.

It's the hardness of the lead. #6 is super soft and #1 would be too hard to write with.
