depends on the cell phone carrier...
If it is Sprint, you have a program called "Family locator" that will allow you to use the phone's GPS chip to locate its whereabouts.

There are conditions. The phone has to be on a family plan with the parent's phone. It has to be GPS capable, and it has to be on to be located. Also, it gives the "located" phone a text message informing that it has been located.

Also, you can find out how fast the phone travels. You can get an alert if the phone goes to certain locations at certain times of day. (You can get an alert, for example, if the phone leaves school property before 3:00PM...

The service costs $10 per month, but its worth it if you have wild teenagers.

If your phone is from another carrier, then I can't help you....

There is a feature known as "chaparone" that some phones have. You have to pay extra for this service.

If he is missing, call the police. The cell phone company may be able to read the GPS location off the phone, which they will provide to the police if they are searching for a missing person.

I was in the same situation a few years ago. There is a way to track his cell phone but you have to install the program in the phone first so that won't work now. Since he is a minor you should have already contacted the police to file a missing person report.

It takes a lot of software and hardware to find where a cell phone is. Consumers pay, directly or indirectly, cell phone companies for this service.
