Where I live you can leave right away if you want. But you can stay up to two nights if you need it.

If you have a normal, vaginal delivery, you should be at home :) It's safer there for you anyway!
However if you do go to the hospital, you can leave as soon as you'd like. You don't *have* to stay for any amount of time, though most would *prefer* you stay at least 4 hours.

Most insurances will only pay for 24 hours of stay unless there are problems. I was released after two days with my first. With my second I was begging to go home after one day! You cant get a good nights sleep in there! The nurses want to come all hours of the night to do the tests on the baby or take their picture. Of course this wakes up the new mother and the baby that she just got to sleep!

Depends on where you live and the hospital policy. Where I gave birth the first time you can leave after 30 minutes or you can stay 24 hours.
My second I had at home -so much better.

I had to stay for 2 days, I was induced, but I had a normal vaginal delivery, no stitches or tearing either :)

Re. answers along the lines of "you have to stay overnight" -- you do not HAVE to do ANYTHING; you can walk out of any hospital as soon as you can walk.
There are no "laws" forcing women to be imprisoned in hospitals, in Alabama or anywhere else. There may be a "hospital policy" that pretends it to be mandatory for women to hang around, but. You and your baby may leave at any time.

It's all depends, if your nursing they want to make sure the baby is laching and eating well. I had to keep a record of everytime the baby nurse and for how long.
They also want to make sure you are doing well and walking around;
I stayed in the hospital for 3 days.

In New York you stay for 2 nights unless there is a reason to stay more. The reason for this is because the insurance companies don't want to pay for anymore than they need to.
