C or a derivative will be best for client based software, it is generally the basis of anything on a pc. I guarantee you will take much longer than a week to use it effectively.

The best depends on what you're trying to make. If you're building an interactive web application it might be Flash or Java. If you're making an operating system it will probably be C.
