But I don't like the city. Is there anywhere in Socal that is 'country' or a rural type area? I would prefer to have little to no neighbors, but still be close enough to civilization that I could go do things when I wanted. Are there any areas left like this in Southern Cali?

There are plenty of towns inland from the ocean that are what you are looking for. In San Diego county you should check on Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow. Tons of places just 20 - 30 miles inland. But then why move to SoCal ? Good luck and for the best transportation, things to do, reasonable housing San Diego is your best bet.

Try Temecula and its surrounding communties. Its about 50 mins from LA county 30 mins from OC and just over an hour from San Diego. There are a bunch of new housing communities being built.
