I am 20 years old. Whenever I drink alcohol, my face gets beet red. This has always turned me off from drinking because I feel embarrassed.

Also, I don't like losing control. I hate remembering the next day that I acted differently and possibly like an idiot. Thoughts?

Plus, the taste of alcohol always makes me flinch. Especially hard liquor such as vodka.

Like my Dad always says, if it hurts-don't do it. If you go to a party and everyone else is drinking and you think you should. Do this, get a glass, put some ice in it, now get some 7-up or something like that, that is clear. Now you can act like everyone else that is drinking. You won't turn red and or get sick. In the morning you will be ready for another party. Have fun, it will work. I know, because I do it myself. Someone in the group needs to be able to drive the others home. Have fun, Snowman

Some say drinking is an acquired taste, some wonder why one would want to acquire it.

If you find something you like the taste of, enjoy it responsibly. It's up to you to avoid losing control and acting like an idiot; hangovers are the consequences of your actions, not the punishment.

So, if you don't like drinking, don't drink. Ginger ale in a pint glass or mug looks just like beer. I had a friend who used to barter some interesting business deals in a bar by having an agreement with the bartender to give him glasses of club soda with a lime rather than vodka tonics.

Some say that the true nature of a person is revealed when they're drunk.

As for a visible flush when you drink, I don't know if anyone can help you with that or if it's simply a matter of getting your body used to it.

So, be yourself. If you don't feel like drinking, don't drink. Sometimes that's more entertaining than drinking at a party. Or terrifying, depending on the circumstances.

It sounds like you have a number of very good reasons not to drink. Why is this a problem for you? If "friends" try to push you to drink, then they are not real friends. Stick to what YOU are comfortable with. Lots of people don't drink, and that means no DWI, no unsafe sex because you were too drunk to cover up, no regrets for doing something stupid under the influence. Just don't get preachy and you should be fine. Nobody likes to be lectured at if they do decide to drink, and there is no reason you have to put up with being lectured at about not drinking. It's your decision, nobody else's.

Probably not. I could never learn to like drinking either. It was a little rough when I went to college, and also when I was in the military, but I just could never learn to like it. People would try to bully me into drinking...they seemed to think I would enjoy life more. I think they were wrong, because I have always enjoyed every phase of my life. I think my life has been better because I don't drink. Also I look a lot younger because I don't drink, and never smoked either.

You are blessed. A lot of people don't drink these days, so it's not like you would be a weirdo if you didn't. In fact, why not just give it up all together? Over the long haul, you'll be healthier and safer if you don't imbibe.
