But I don't like the city. Is there anywhere in Socal that is 'country' or a rural type area? I would prefer to have little to no neighbors, but still be close enough to civilization that I could go do things when I wanted. Are there any areas left like this in Southern Cali?

Temecula use to be a bit rural feeling but that was more than 20 years ago. Now it's just an upper middle class bedroom community. Other communities suggested by the first answer would be communities I would describe as solidly suburbia.

You might consider looking in the Ramona and Julian areas..the towns have gotten a bit busy but in the surrounding areas there might be something you like. Also try Rainbow, Fallbrook, Harbison Canyon, Pala and Pauma Valley. Valley Center use to be pretty rural feeling but I think that's gotten to be a bit overgrown. I don't know what's available in the Laguna Mts or Cuyamaca Mts east of San Diego, as those had beutiful areas with pine trees but the fires in 2003 wiped out a lot of that.

Look into an area outside of Julian called Pine Hills, or nearby Wynola. Very charming little communities but within an hour or so of San Diego proper. Or also consider Warner Springs. I've noticed they have a trailer park area there that didn't look too bad which could be an inexpensive alternative if you can't afford your own house.

In North county there is Fallbrook, Bonstall, Poway, Escondido, or anywhere out towards Mt. Palomar. Lots of area off Interstate 15 between Escondido and Temecula. You'll love wherever it is. This is the greatest place on earth to live. Everything from the beaches to the mountains to Mexico is only a hour or so away. Welcome

Anywhere inland about 20 miles in the San Diego county area is more rural and a bunch cheaper. The problem is it is also hotter in the summer and cooler in the winter.

there are a few cities out there that are country-ish. They are not the greatest places in the world but you might like it.
Try: Temecula, Escondido, Perris, Hemet, Corona, Riverside, La Jolla, Lake Elsinore. Places out in Riverside and east san diego counties.
good luck

Try Lakeside. It's a very eastern part of San Diego county.
