I'd love to have Santana in pinstripes dont get me wrong, but giving up Melky Cabrera and Phil Hughes, come on. I really hope this falls through because that is just too much for one player. Give up Melky and what do you have left in the outfield? A bunch of over paid players on the decline. Melky is an up and coming perennial Gold Glover and his bat isnt bad either. Phil Hughes was coveted so long and in the playoffs showed the big stage doesnt scare him. Santana is just like A-rod has a Cy Young (In Rodriguez case MVP) year but in the playoffs just show his greatness. I really think this would be a bad trade, Yankees need to stick to their young guys thats how they won in the 90s after all.

I agree, but the Yankees have plans to beat Red Sox P Josh Beckett by using Johan Santana.

I still like the deal. Personally, I like Melky but he is at best a gold glove .300-15 hitter. Right now there are several good outfielders on the market. He can be replaced.

Hughes I think may have problems. He was inconsistant last year, throwing lots of pitches and seemingly rarely making it through the 5th inning. Also his velocity is way down from 2006 (from 96-97 to 92-93). So I think his future as an ace is iffy.

Meanwhile, Johann is in his prime and you know what you will get: an ERA below 4.00, 200K and less than 75BB. That is a recipe for 20+ wins with the heavy hitting Yankee line up. Heck, I mean if Wang can get 19 wins two years in a row, Santana gets at least that easy.

I say pull the trigger and the Yankees are all the better for it. Hughes & Melky are years (if ever) from greatness. Santana is here and now with 5 more elite years to go.

I would think that if all it would take to land Santana is Cabrera and Hughes, you would jump at it.

Think of it this way, if Hughes and Cabrera will become great, trade them and wait 4 and 5 years and sign them as free agents.

I hope if the Yankees get Santana, it takes more than that.
That trade will be a steal for the best pitcher in baseball.

Phil Hughes is going to be nothing more than an average pitcher. Everyone is saying that now after seeing his stuff. His fastball is flat and not that fast. To keep Johan away from the Red Sox would be worth it. I was never a big Melky fan. He's got no power and is overrated with the bat. There are a lot of CF's available who are better (Rowand, Dye)

Giving up Melky and Hughes is excessive but that's the only way this deal will go thru. The latest news is that the Yankees will try to sign Aaron Rowland to compensate for losing Melky. I keep saying to friends that if Santana comes to NY, it might give Andy Petitte incentive to come back.

If the Yankees don't get Santana, Boston will. Which means bad news for every MLB team. Boston looked unstoppable last year, and if they were to add arguably the best pitcher in baseball, they are looking straight into a dynasty. I personally believe that Steinbrenner will allow Santana to slip to Boston. Yankees will trade for him.

i don't think its stupid the Yankees want the greatest pitcher in baseball right know in pinstripes but and true Santana is amazing but i would not want to give up the Prospects that later will help the Yankees organization a ton i hope the trade doesn't come true either

Why would the Twins give up the best pitcher in the world for a mediocre outfielder and an unproven starter?

I agree this trade would be stupid - for the Twins.

Trying to work out a deal for the best pitcher in baseball is not stupid. Any team would be lucky to have him.
