Do the blokes standing outside pubs smoking look like 'over the hill' rent boys touting for trade? Did our government realise how bad and dodgy this would look?

Its in the mannerisms of furtively looking up and down the road whilst having a drag.

I agree that we look a sorry sight. The other problem is that rather than helping me to stop smoking, I've found that at work and pubs, we've formed strong friendships and bonds with other smokers, not what I'd hoped for.
I live opposite a pub/restaurant, the noise at night has increased and the raucous laughter and shouting goes on well into the night.

definite. The "interior sight" pubs (ingesting properties) are ineffective now throughout iciness. There are indications up outdoors asking human beings to take them over, in the event that they haven`t been boarded up. This, plus the cheap booze you're able to purchase interior the supermarkets, is signalling the loss of life of your "interior sight" I even have each appreciate for non human beings who smoke yet this difficulty would have been dealt with with easy experience. I don`t think of this question has something to do with "eating out" i might never smoke in a eating place. in case you are able to`t do with out smoke for a pair of hours you're in a bad way.

I'm an ex smoker who gave up for health reasons & this outright ban with no facility for smokers is a step to far!
Prohibition of anything that people enjoy doing doesn't work & just leads to further problems!
This fact is completely ignored by the mind set that wishes to control everything to suit their own agenda!

To hell with how bad it looks - and it does, although not dodgy rent boy bad - 1. Pubs smell better. 2. Staff (who may not smoke) are not being exposed to passive smoking and 3. Other customers are also not being exposed.
The introduction of this law also made me give up. I just got fed up with desperately trying to find somewhere to have a ciggie. Can't smoke in enclosed public places like train stations, bus stations, airports so when travelling I was constantly dodging outside and panicking in case I would miss my flight etc. Same at work charging up and down 3 flights of stairs just to get outside for a cig. To be perfectly honest I just couldn't be bothered anymore.
So I don't care if it looks dodgy; the government have made a smart move for all concerned and I have at last kicked the habit - 1 year and 1 month!

You should be more worried that you (Even none smokers) will be paying more tax in 2008, let me explain,

First off, Pubs and clubs have already noticed a decline in custom as smokers are not going to go outside in the cold/damp to smoke. So takings are down at the bar meaning less tax for the tax man...
These people will simply stay at home until the warmer weather comes back. They may get cans of beer/drink from shops and drink at home so they can smoke in the warm... again as beer is cheaper in shops the tax man gets less tax. Some people will stop smoking .... less tax again...

You see if im not right.....

As far as none smokers health.... yes i do think they shouldnt have to sit in rooms with smokers... but i was amazed to see that before the ban came in pubs with a None smoking room and a smoking room tended to have the none smoking room empty and the smoking room full... of both smokers and none smokers !

I know two bar owners and one club owner and all have said takings are down.....

One of them says he may have to close up ....

I think its gone a stage too far

I just cant wait for the day when posters on here are asking, "What was a Pub"

Believe me, alchohol is one of the next targets for the do gooders, landlords are already struggling post smoke ban, wait till the cost and availability of drink is hit.

Close them now, I dont use them, drink related crime costs the Uk far more than smoke related illnesses used to.

More people are dying of drinl related illnesses than ever died through smoking, so lets have them closed down and pulled down.

After all, that is where criticisms like yours are leading so lets go for it.

I think its discrimmination. here In Australia they have banned it in Pubs and clubs but these places have lots of money from Pokie machines so they have made an outdoor smoking area. The sad thing is they have made us all into street smokers if we aren't in the pubs or clubs and that is awful.

Yes, they thought about it. That's why the only pub in the UK where you can smoke is in the Houses of Parliment. They don't want the real 'Rent boys' hanging around on the street.

I doubt they considered that every pub would now how people loitering around outside, probably assumed that they'd all give up!
I don't think they look like they're 'touting their trade' but it definately does look dodgy, its so not a good look.
