Without a doubt the 1950s. The war was over there were plenty of jobs, rock and roll was born, everybody was making babies, polio was eliminated and life was much simpler. Cars were cool, space was conquered, Godzilla was born and teenagers were heroes in the monster movies like the Blob and the Giant Gila monster. If you haven't guessed yet I was born in 1950 and it was a good time to grow up.

The nation as a whole, and the largest majority of the people in it, are prospering right now more than ever before. Keeping in mind that there has never been a time when all the people were doing well, you have to look at what percentage of the population is prosperous. You also have to define prosperous - not in a dollar amount but what percentage are healthy, have access to health care, can feed their families, have a reasonable access to what we consider to be everyday things but are actually luxuries. This is the time right now.

I have never, in my 60 years seen the affluence of today. EVERYONE drives a new car or SUV. Cell phones everywhere. Pods, computers. More food then I have every imagined. Our little town mall has 10 upscale clothing stores, Academy always has crowded aisles. The local jewelry stores have people there all of the time. Big screen TVs proliferate.
Go to E-Bay. Do you know what Hot Wheels are? One sold today for $2600.00.
When I was growing up in the 50's my dad barely made that in a year.
The industrial revolution was a miserable time in America. People lived in slave like conditions. There was no sewage, fresh water was at a premium.
I definitely would have to say that today is the best.
Some will disagree, but even in our Ghetto, I see $2000 worth of chrome rims on cars.

So many people are suffering ALL THE TIME, so forget a specific time period for suffering.
I would say late '50s and early '60s. Inflation (real inflation, not the phony Government inflation being reported now) was low; growth was steady at about 3 percent per annum. There was low unemployment; no wars; no civil unrest. Liberals were not yet the controlling folks they are now. Peace reigned. You could leave your doors unlocked and not fear.
