That question is a true psychological one. I'm going to answer it by introspection. I think I feel a beginning of a down or depressed emotion when some one says or does something that negatively impinges on my view of self at that moment or for the future.. I probably try to give another the best impression of me as I can to avoid that down or sinking feeling. If my "say so" about myself is honest then I'm OK but if it is less than honest I may have to suffer the pangs of guilt over my deception from an internal conscience or even more adverse criticism if my lie is found out. In any case it pays off to be honest about oneself in self respect and the esteem of others.

How likely one is to lie about oneself is very dependent on what that other person represents to you. It may be different for each of the situations above. One is more likely to exaggerate their image with people who are in a position to adversely affect them. If you need to magnify your self esteem you may lie about your importance even to your self; that is called a delusion of grandeur. If you truly love the other like in friendship or family you feel more comfortable being honest.

Good luck in your human relations, good mental health, peace and Love!

usually people dont set out to impress others, it just happens , at least in my case.

As for people who set out to impress others it may have the opposite effect or the person may take it as a genuine compliment.

You can impress someone in many different ways. When you go out of your way to do an act of kindness or something small that is thoughtful it will probably impress someone.

If you brag about yourself or overdo it it may have the opposite effect.
