Examples are : "Wow, you have changed. You look so pretty now" and "I didn't think you would be so good at this job".

It is a compliment...just kinda phrased poorly. The person should concentrate on the comment they want to make and not on the times before. They should just say, "Wow, you look really nice". Or "You are very efficent at this job". But they use comparisons instead. It would still be a compliment, as they are in the present tense, comparing you to the past (which no longer exists). But I understand how that can sound like an underhanded slam.

yes i would take them as compliments you know some people really mean nothing by what they are saying they just dont' know how to say it and it comes out like that. why make an old enemy when you can let it roll off your back and move on. that is me and i try to make peace to all i can if i am backed in a hole then i coudl change but it would take something big. take care.

About the job one, I wouldn't really think anything initially... I'd realise it could be either, and ask them further about what they meant, to figure it out.
