Is it legal to hide your IP address and where do you get the software that is safe?

The easiest way to hide your IP address is to use a router that has NAT (Network Address Translation) capabilities. Most, if not all, have this feature built in now of days. And yes, it is legal, but there are many ways your IP address can still be discovered, even with protection in place. Every bit of defense helps though.

hiding your ip address isn't going to do anything. You can still get viruses, the only thing you might be able to avoid is getting hacked, but no hacker is going to bother hacking a residential machine unless there's a really compelling reason to target you specifically. Viruses/worms are built for those purposes.

However to answer your question - the best way to hide your ip address with web traffic is to use a web proxy. It has nothing to do with software, and yes - it is legal. The EFF has a product called Tor that works well for the purpose of disguising your IP address, but depending on which server you go through, could translate into slower speeds.

It depends on what you're trying to hide the IP address from. Are you saying that you are on your personal computer, and you don't want websites to know your IP? If so, use an anonymizer. Check out the source below. You go to the site first, then type in the web address you want to really go to. The anonymizer does not give out your IP to the sites.
