I bought a house that already had snow melt cables on the roof, but I don't know the proper way to use them. I thought I could get away with having them on intermitently, but I still got huge ice dams. Do I have to leave them on basically 24/7 during the winter.

These work when put in properly, follow directions and they should do a decent job. They won't melt a four foot drift over your doorway, they're made for basically ice over the door or gutters.
