Dad always gave us beer on hot days when we had to bale hay or straw and throw bales up in that hot hay loft. And mom and dad both smoked so we all took up that habit when we were teens. Did not have to worry about getting caught. they did not care.

Almost all the kids in my class in high school smoked, it was a small school and there were only 34 kids in the whole class. Only one or two 'googy-goodys" didn't. I never got caught , I was kind of a rebel anyway and I just told mymother I had started smoking. She threw a fit, but it didn't stop me. As soon as we turned 16, and were juniors and seniors, we could always get somebody's older brother to buy us beer and we would pile into somebody's car and go to the lake on the weekends and hang out and drink beer. I don't think any of us ever got too drunk, we didn't have enough money for that much beer and we had to share with everybody, so nobody actually got more than a couple. I saw most of those "kids" at our highschool reunion last year, and they all turned out pretty good, so I guess none of us were any the worse for our "wild" ways. We never really got caught, we were pretty careful. And, not a one of them smoked anymore!

My family didn't smoke or drink, but when I was 14 I went to live with my grandparents for a year. For the first time in my life I was surrounded by people who's families did those things. I worked in Grandpas drug store and stole packs of cigarettes to take to parties and had friends who's parents drank so started drinking not beer but Hard Liquor, even going so far as to take it to school in a thermos. I thought I was so cool. I kept smoking when I got home and got caught shoplifting one day and my mom saw my cigarettes-she threatened to tell my dad unless I quit that day. I told her I would but I didn't. I did quit a year later as soon as I found out I was pregnant with my son-It wasn't too hard-I had never actually inhaled!! I only smoked for the "coolness". Haven't had a drink in over 30 years now either.

Cigarettes, yes. My sister and I took some from my mom and we "hid" in the driveway (we couldn't see the house so we thought we were invisible) and smoked a few.... cough, cough. I think that our mom knew what we did and we got a bit more than a "look"! As for beer... I don't recall beer in the house. My dad did keep some liquor in the pantry and I will admit to taking a bottle of brandy when I was a teenager, but didn't get caught. My sister told me that once she took a cottage cheese container and poured a little bit of this and a little bit of that into the container, mixed it up and shared it with her friends. I'm so glad that I wasn't one of her friends!

Yes, I snuck a cigarette when I was eating lunch with my friends at a local drugstore, on lunch hour while in high school. My mom walked into the drugstore & saw me with a cig in my hand. She didn't confront me, but that night, when I got home from high school, I got a lecture from both my mom & dad, who were both smokers. As for sneaking beer, yes, I did, but I was 13 y/o & I drank the little bit that was left in my mom's bottle while I was enroute to the kitchen to put the bottle on the kitchen counter. Yuk!!!! I didn't like the taste & never drank beer again.

If you had ever seen my Grandfathers razor strap you would know better than to try to sneak anything like that. We were not even allowed to listen to cigarette or beer commercials... we had to GET UP and turn the volume down on the television set, every time one of these commercials came on! Grandfathers razor strap met my fanny twice in my life, trust me.... never
I do remember my Uncle, when he lived with my Mom doing something like that. She went out, bought a bottle of Bacardi and a carton of Pall Malls (?). She sat there with Uncle and one of his friends and had a party. They sat there drinking and smoking, laughing and telling jokes until both the bottle and the carton were empty... Those poor guys were puking in the petunias all night! She just laughed!

well i did sneak a beer when i was a kid and no i was not caught. My dad told me when he was about 7 (1957) he stole one of my grandfathers cigs and went down to the park to have a smoke. the neighbor saw him and dragged him home. My grandfather made him smoke a whole pack (one right after the other) my dad never did smoke again until he went to Vietnam.

I picked up a cigarette butt from the grass when my dad threw it down and went inside. I took a good puff off of it. My dad then took us kids to the movies, my brother immediately told Dad what I had done. I thought I would die. Dad didn't say anything, just looked at me and raised that eyebrow. That was the last sneaky thing I did as a kid.

No one in my family smoked except when I was12 my sister-in-law did. She used to leave a few cigs for my sister and I when she visited and we would sneak up to the hay mow and smoke them. I never inhaled though. (really) When I was 13
I went with my sister and her boyfriend to visit my grandma in the nursing home and as we sat in the car he taught us how to inhale. Talk about sick!!! I smoked off and on, quitting sometimes for five yrs or more, until I quit for good almost three yrs ago. My Dad was a minister so I never knew anyone
who drank until I met my first husband when I was 16. ( That should have been a clue there......... hummmm?)
edit: I never got caught.
