I know that it's dangerous for one to have an unsecure wireless router due to hackers and harmless neighborhood hijackers. But what if one is DOING the hijacking? Are there any dangers for the hijacker?

First off it's illegal if they password protect it. And it's possible to tell what computers are using the network.

And second, once you join, you're in the network. You're just as vulnerable to attack as someone else's computer who's paying for the internet.

Perhaps we should use the correct terminology. You are not hijacking, you are stealing. That is called theft. It may only be a misdemeanor because of the value but depending on your age it could be a permanent blot on your record. May not be a biggie to you now but what if a prospective employer does a background check????? Would you still get the job.

As far as the safety of your computer. That doesn't change just because you are on a different network so you are as safe as though you were on your own network. Something else to remember, you cannot hide your identity just because you are on another network. Every time you use the enter key there are identifying information that is sent. There is no easy way to change that. If someone wants to go after you for theft you have already told them who you are.pp

You connected to your neighbor? If you can do it, so can anyone else. Most who would, have no further intention in mind than browsing the web and checking their email............

Some others though will use this open wireless connection to hack any computer connected to the network. Anyone who connects to that network can see your computer and attempt to hack it..........Use at your own risk to your computer's security..........not to mention it is considered electronic trespass should your neighbor want to pursue it!

Do yourself a favor, Get your own broadband connection and wireless router.....lock down your router (read up on "wireless security", Google it!) and keep your OS updated and your firewall on.......maybe you will be safe.

If your computer is protected with
Virus Software.
Adaware 2007
Spybot's Search and Destroy
You'll be allright until they put you in jail for highjacking your neighbors Internet Service. It's not a joke I have read of several that were prosecuted.

Nope. Because if your neighbor gets a virus into his network, and you connect to it, you get the virus too. But that doesn't happen often, maybe like 2 out of 100 people get that.

Honestly, you have to see the big picture. All the big crackers out there (hacker is the wrong term for people who cause trouble,) want to go after big public targets so they'll be famous. You'll be fine :)

Danger...yes! When your neighbor finds out that you are stealing his connection, he will pay someone to beat the crap out of you.

I would think jail time would be a danger and real possibility.
