It should be OK - just make sure the supplement you are purchasing has a certification label on the back from one of the dietary supplement regulation organizations. If it doesn't have a logo of one of the 4 or 5 organizations that certify supplement contents, you may not be getting everything you're paying for. Also, most daily women's multivitamins, such as One-A-Day Women's, contain enough iron for young women. Don't buy a men's multivitamin or one for postmenopausal women (neither of these vitamin types will contain iron!)
Taking a daily multivitamin is good in many ways - once you get in the habit of doing it, you'll probably do it for life. This is especially important since most multivitamins for women contain Folate or Folic Acid. Taking Folate or Folic Acid PRIOR to becoming pregnant greatly reduces the risk of birth defects, miscarriage, and premature birth... so like I said - why just take an iron pill when you can take a multivitamin that will do the same thing - and more?
I also have to disagree with the next post on here about the label being misleading about its iron content... the doctor prescribed 325 mg of ferrous sulfate, which contains 65mg of iron - the rest is the "sulfate" sulfur molecules. As long as you're taking the iron content prescribed - which the package suggests you are, it should be fine.
Additionally, doctors frequently write scripts for things that you can get OTC. I had back pain for a while and my doc wrote a script for Naproxen Sodium... that's the active ingredient in standard Aleve. So, instead of getting it filled, I bought a bottle of Aleve with the same dosage as on my script. And no, the script didn't list any other component like Codeine or anything. I couldn't believe he wanted me to fill a script for Aleve and pay the prescription price!

It can be bought over the counter in Boot's, BUT you have to have a consultation with the pharmacists.
There are also some online pharmacies that employ qualified and registered doctors, who after an online 'consultation' provide a script that is then honored by that pharmacy.

Those spring valley ones, I have used, but they really dont do much other than stop you up..The best iron supplement I have ever used is black strap molasses..It's available in the health food stores most of the time, take a table spoon twice a day, and it's very easily absorbed by your body..When I had a miscarriage, I lost alot of blood, and taking this, I could tell a difference within a couple of hours! good luck

Iron is far to dangerous for anybody to get tooo much. I would never take any supplement with Iron and if I needed one it would be from a plant source. Iron is a heavy metal and Iron imbalance can be fatal. Three things have to be present for cancer to take root and grow: Low oxygen levels in the bloodstream, High Iron and an acidic environment. Before I take any Iron supplement I would get my ferritin level and compare it for myself. Be proactive in your health care and check out your levels for yourself. Mine is only 318 (well within the normal range) but I had a problem and for me that was too high but I have my ferritin checked regularly now and 90% of the doctors have no idea that there is a problem there. So, just be sure and be safe. All iron is not the same!

I was prescribed the same thing for anemia, and I actually thought it was a prescription and when I gave the pharmacist the prescription, they said it was over-the-counter. So yes, it is the same thing. It cannot call itself iron if it is not.

I love how all the pharmacy employees and doctor s wives want us to run up the bills to the insurance companies for no good reason just to pad the pockets or their own special interests.. . .OTC is regulated and if they say equivalent that is what it means.
Doctors love insurance because they can charge $340 an hour to an insurance company and get taken out to cool conferences by Drug Reps.

You should look for iron supliments that also contain minerals and vitamins that will help you to absorb the iron. Iron by itself can be hard for the body to digest properly. You should also take probiotics with the iron pill. they will help your stomach absorb the iron, settle it and help to keep you from becoming constipated from the iron. I usually by my supliments from Wild oats they have a good selection.

Hmm, well it could have the equivilent of the iron amout but I doubt it, look at the numbers 65MG and 325MG? There's a significant difference. I would say the best idea is to ask the pharmacist at the drug store (that's why they're there) but probably not. If your doctor though an Iron OTC would be ok then he would have told yout o get an OTC Iron Suppliment, not an Rx, I also believe that the Ferrous Sulphate may be able to provide you with additional help that an iron suppliment couldn't

With insurance, you are safe, healthy, and above all, very happy. You will be able to get the health care you so rightly deserve and you will never have to worry about the price of health care again. Remember what we said earlier about some doctors not wanting to see you without health insurance, well with the insurance, you will be able to see any doctor you want, anywhere you choose.
