and the doctor recommended pedialite. My question is, can dehydration cause excessive belly aches to the point of extreme crying? I've never heard of this but it seems to be working perfectly. He recommended it for colic too.

Our son had colic that was severe. He became dehydrated from excessive crying. We gave pedialyte because he was not drinking as much as he was crying- and sweating out the excess. It didn't seem to help with the colic, but it did prevent him from becoming dehydrated.

He was breastfed for 8 weeks and under misadvice from our pediatrician, we took him off the breast and gave soy formula. Big mistake. He was crying for 5 hours on the breast per night. On soy or Alimentum, it was 18 hours a day. It was horrific. So, all babies thereafter will be and have been breastfed.

My son had G.E.R.D so trust me what your son has is nothing try being a single first time mother with no family at all with a child that is sick. SO sick that he threw up all the time that would go across the room. I freaked out knowing it was not normal at all and took him to the ER and was told never to go around my son. Yeah, it was bad but they had thought a single women at 20 with no family was so bad that they thought I was killing my son. They found out my son was back then a rare case of G.E.R.D. Put it this way even pedialite never worked. I went through hell and learned allot. SO if you feel your child's doctor isn't right for your son then try another one it wont hurt your child at all. You need to make sure his health is taken care of at such a young age. If what your doctor is saying is working then what is the problem. Children get sick from day one tell they are old and gray its nothing you can stop. SO do what your heart and mind feels is right if you feel this doctor may have missed something then see another its what I did and well my son is still here and is 8 years old now with no problems.

The belly aches are probably due to the colic which is why he is crying. Poor little guy. I never heard of giving them pedialite for colic but if it's working thats great!

Sounds like maybe colic, but I'm sure your doctor would have said that.

Are you breastfeeding?

Formula can cause all kinds of intestinal problems that cause a lot of pain for newborn infants.

Haven't heard of using Pedialyte for belly aches; but I guess if its working...? Did his doctor say he is dehydrated? Because you are breastfeeding, something in your diet could be giving him gas. Highly spiced foods, garlic, caffeine, cabbage, onions. If you find the offending food, you might want to avoid it for awhile.

I'm glad to here that the breastfeeding has been going better. Your welcome:)
