I want to put one of my old copies of xp or 98 on an old machine for my kids. The A drive is shot and the discs do not seem to want to boot from the CD. Can I go through an install on a working machine and aim everything at the external drive, then put that drive on an old machine? Thanks!

It should work, but be sure you don't try to activate XP until you have it on the kids computer.

Dude, you can buy a new floppy drive for $7. Hell, I will give you one. Just tell me where to send it. You can get a kit at Walmart with a floppy cleaning diskette, and a CD drive cleaner. It costs about $10.

Install 98..unless you have an XP key for their computer. You will need to have a minimum of 256MB of RAM for XP.

98 CD is not bootable. You must not have your CMOS set to boot to the CD if XP wont boot.

No way in hell an old computer is gonna boot to an external drive. USB was new in 98, so the BIOS and chipset arent gonna recognize an external USB anything, hard drive or jump drive.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Yes you can.

Are the peripherals same on the old as it is on the new? meaning - the modem, mouse, network cards etc..

Then get this software: http://www.acronis.com

It will take a *exact* copy of your harddrive and copy on to a destination drive (external drive in this case). Verbatim, with all the drivers and all....

Install the destination drive in the old machine.

Delete from the destination drive things you do not want your kids to have.

There.... your kids will have an exact replica of your computer minus the items you deleted.

You can install onto another drive if you want to, just make sure you point it in the right direction, don't want to mes up what you have on your computer. Or you can go to a computer store and buy a new floppy drive and install it in the older computer. they are about 20.00 brand new

You might be able to create a virtual drive and install the new OS on to your other computer from that hard drive.

Then do not install but rip your Win98 or XP disk to that virtual drive and it should install just fine from there.

if you edit the bios on the old machine to boot from the external device

No, it will set up incorrect information and probably crash on boot. Check you have the bios boot order set to cd first, or get a new floppy drive.
