On the show they mention Captain Pike.

But the name Robert April appears in some sources such as books and the animated show. But I don't think you see it anywhere else.

According to wikipedia:
"The USS Enterprise, (NCC-1701) is a fictional starship in the television series Star Trek"

"Star Trek: The Animated Series and novels by Diane Carey state that Robert April was the Enterprise's first commanding officer. Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) commanded the Enterprise for a decade, and Pike is the commanding officer in the original Star Trek pilot for TV"

"The Enterprise (NX-01) is a fictional starship in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Enterprise. It is commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer."

So you can see in the original Star trek Series, the enterprise was a NCC-1701, first piloted by Pike, and later animated and novel incarnations refer to an earlier pilot, April.

the NX-01 didn't come along until the "prequel" , Star Trek Enterprise.

Robert April according to official Stat Trek canon.

As mentioned in Star Trek, the animated series as the first commanding officer, Commodore Robert April, then Captain Pike, then Captain Kirk

I am with by Y!Arnlad...Pike was mentioned several times in the original series.

Many people do not count the animated series...let's face it...they are nothing but cartoons...

The NX series, even though the series is based on a time line before the NCC-1701, it was a series that was made AFTER TOS.

And Diane Duane by many is not considered cannon even though her stories are good.

I was certain it was Pike. Wikipedia also lists Robert April, stardate 2245, as the Captain of the 1701 model.

As a lifelong fan, I'll stick with Christopher Pike as the first captain.

Captain Pike was the one in the pilot story, and then Kirk replaced him.
