I would use safety glasses made for laboratory use. Construction safety glasses aren't meant to protect your eyes if your are working with chemicals. Chemical splash can be a danger to your face and vision. I would use a face shield as well, safety should be your utmost concern.

Usually the only thing is that there is some kind of physical barrier between your eyes and the liquids or possibly breaking glass in the lab. So contractors' safety glasses for OSHA regs are even stronger than that. They should be fine but be sure to get the ones with side and edge protection if the ones in the lab have side and edge protection.

Safety glasses are safety glasses. Some are made for specific uses and are tolerant to certain chemicals or impacts or damaging light rays. Check out the link below. It is a web page for safety glasses and gives descriptions for their uses. It also gives prices. You might find something there about the type of glasses you want to wear and the glasses you may need to wear.

You must find out what is required for your use. Are you in school? Does your school have a safety glasses requirement? Are you in an industrial lab? Does your company have safety glasses requirements? Forget about ugly! Your eyesight is precious! Blind is worse than ugly!

The contractor glasses should be fine... the main thing that they're there for is to protect you from splashing chemicals.... unless it's a welding lab >.<

It honestly depends on your teacher. I used regular safety glasses for my first chem class and my teacher had no issue with it. In my second chem class, I tried using the same ones, and she told me to use the goggles that leave the line and have face grease and fingerprints all over them. I wasn't too happy. But you just need to ask your teacher.

Because somewhere down the line, someone in charge said that it offers more protection. And I am going to assume that that person was a bit of a nerd and didn't care about how something looked as long as it worked. =]
