I remember being terrified of it as a child, but not even really knowing what it was. Could someone explain it? And, is it just one of those things with a catchy, scary name that the TV folks hyped up, or was a significant problem...?

it was a real serious problem but sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide in pollution have been reduced so no problem any longer, at least not in this continent,
the environment is recovering from harm due to acid rain

It is certainly something that the media hyped but, scientifically, it is real, it is a problem, and it is still occurring today. You can probably find details on the chemistry of of acid rain and the effect the pH of the rain has on ecosystems at Wikipeida.com. In the U.S., environmental laws were enacted to reduce the pollutants involved in creating acid rain but developing countries, particularly China, India, and eastern europe have not enacted environmental laws.

Do some reasearch adn you should be able to find lots of info.
